What Is the Solunar Table?
The solunar table is a tool that predicts the best times to fish based on the position of the moon and sun. It was developed by John Alden Knight in 1926, who after analyzing over 200 records of exceptional catches, discovered that 90% occurred during specific periods related to lunar transit.
How Does It Work?
Solunar theory is based on the idea that fish (and other animals) have periods of peak feeding activity that coincide with astronomical events:
Major Periods (2 hours)
Major periods occur when the moon is directly overhead (upper lunar transit) or directly below (lower lunar transit) your location. During these periods, gravitational pull is at its maximum and fish feed more aggressively.
Minor Periods (1 hour)
Minor periods coincide with moonrise and moonset. These are shorter activity windows but equally productive.
Moon Phase
The moon phase amplifies or reduces activity:
- New Moon and Full Moon: Peak activity. The sun-moon-earth alignment produces maximum gravitational pull.
- First Quarter and Last Quarter: Moderate activity. The sun and moon form a 90° angle.
How to Use the Solunar Table
- Check the periods for your location and date on PescaSolunar
- Plan your trip to arrive at least 30 minutes before a major period
- Prioritize New Moon or Full Moon days — overall activity is higher
- Combine with weather factors: a major period + falling pressure + overcast = perfect day
Scientific Data
Studies by the Georgia Department of Wildlife (USA) confirmed that largemouth bass feeding activity increases by 35% during major solunar periods compared to neutral periods.
Solunar Table + Weather = Complete Forecast
The solunar table alone gives you an excellent foundation, but for a complete fishing forecast you need to combine it with:
- Barometric pressure: The most important factor after solunar
- Wind: Light breeze activates the surface
- Cloud cover: Overcast sky = bass on the surface
- Precipitation: Light rain = active feeding
At PescaSolunar we combine all these factors into a score from 1 to 10 so you know exactly when to go fishing.
