Baccarac, officially Presa Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, sits in northern Sinaloa near the town of Sinaloa de Leyva. Spanning approximately 40,000 acres, this reservoir on the Sinaloa River delivers a combination of quantity and quality bass fishing that few places in the world can match.

The reservoir features relatively clear water with visibility of 3 to 10 feet depending on the season. Water temperature ranges from 64°F in winter to 86°F in summer, with the optimal fishing zone between 72°F and 79°F.

Baccarac is famous for its consistency: anglers routinely report catching 30 to 80 bass per day, with fish in the 6 to 10 pound range being common. The abundant tilapia population serves as the primary forage, and the structure of rocks and submerged vegetation provides ideal cover.

The local fishing community is welcoming and several world-class lodges operate on the reservoir's shores, making Baccarac an accessible and comfortable destination for international anglers.

Baccarac stands out in the Mexican bass fishing world for its incredible consistency year after year. While some lakes fluctuate dramatically with water levels and weather patterns, Baccarac has maintained its reputation as a 'numbers and quality' destination for over two decades. The resort-style lodges on the lake offer a more comfortable experience than many remote Mexican fisheries.

Conservation at Baccarac is supported by a collaborative relationship between the lodges, local fishing cooperatives, and state wildlife agencies. Catch-and-release compliance among visiting anglers approaches 100%, and the community actively monitors and protects spawning areas during the critical February-April window.

November and December signal the start of Baccarac's trophy season. Water temperatures decline from summer highs into the mid-70s°F, and bass begin their annual migration from deep offshore structure to intermediate depths. This transition period rewards anglers who target the 10-20 foot zone along rocky shelves and timber edges. Reaction baits like squarebill crankbaits and bladed jigs excel during the fall feeding binge.

January through March is Baccarac's golden window. Water temperatures hold in the 68-74°F range, perfect for triggering pre-spawn and spawn behavior. Bass stack up on rocky points, secondary points, and transition banks in 6-15 feet of water. This is when Baccarac delivers its famous combination — catching 50+ bass while also landing multiple fish over 5 pounds. Swimbaits, jerkbaits, and vibrating jigs are deadly during this period.

April marks the tail end of the spawn and the beginning of the post-spawn transition. Catch numbers remain strong but trophy fish become more challenging as they recover from spawning. Shaky heads, finesse worms, and ned rigs excel for picking up post-spawn bass holding on deeper structure. By late April, the summer pattern begins to establish.

May through October sees Baccarac in its warm-season mode. Bass hold in deeper water during midday but feed actively in low-light periods. The early morning topwater bite from 5:30-7:30 AM can be spectacular, with schooling bass pushing tilapia to the surface. This pattern is most reliable from July through September when monsoon rains refresh the reservoir.

Largemouth bass at Baccarac are remarkably healthy and well-proportioned, reflecting the quality of the forage base. Average bass weigh 2-4 pounds, with the upper tier of 5-8 pounders appearing regularly. The lake record approaches 14 pounds. Baccarac bass are particularly aggressive by Mexican standards, willing to strike fast-moving baits with conviction. Their fighting strength is notable — a 4-pound Baccarac bass fights like a 6-pounder from less fertile waters. Key habitats include rocky points, submerged boulders, and the edges of vegetation beds.

Tilapia are the dominant forage species and are present in every habitat zone of the reservoir. Their extraordinary abundance is the engine driving Baccarac's fishery. Juvenile tilapia in the 1-3 inch range are the primary prey for bass, which is why tilapia-colored lures consistently outperform other patterns. Adult tilapia reach 3-5 pounds and school in large groups, particularly over sandy flats.

Catfish species at Baccarac include both channel catfish and flathead catfish, though they are secondary targets. Channel cats average 3-6 pounds and are caught as bycatch on bass lures worked along the bottom. For dedicated catfish anglers, cut tilapia fished near deep points and channel drops produces the best results. Catfish are most active during low-light conditions and after rain events.
