About Falcón

Falcon International Reservoir is a binational body of water shared by Mexico and the United States, built on the Rio Grande. It is jointly managed by the International Boundary and Water Commission, serving as a unique example of international cooperation in water resources.

The reservoir has a combined surface area of over 84,000 acres, with roughly half in each country. Water ranges from moderately clear to stained, depending on Rio Grande flows and seasonal rainfall.

Falcon is legendary for its largemouth bass and large blue catfish. Bass frequently exceed 8 pounds, and blue catfish can reach over 55 pounds. Striped bass are also found in these waters, adding diversity to the fishing.

Binational access means anglers can operate from either side. The Mexican side offers experienced guides and more affordable prices, while the American side has more developed marinas and tourist infrastructure.

Falcon International Reservoir stands as one of North America's elite multi-species fisheries. The unique binational status creates an interesting dynamic — Mexican guides offer more affordable trips with less regulated access, while the US side provides full-service marinas and tournament-caliber infrastructure. Smart anglers often fish with Mexican guides for the value while launching from US-side facilities.

The reservoir has hosted numerous professional bass tournaments and has been featured in every major fishing media outlet. Its combination of trophy largemouth, giant blue catfish, and roaming stripers makes it one of the most diverse and rewarding fishing destinations in all of Mexico and the southern United States.

Fishing Tips

  • 1Jerkbaits and crankbaits are the most productive bass lures at Falcon during spring.
  • 2For blue catfish, anchor over deep zones of 30-50 feet and use fresh cut bait.
  • 3Fish the rocky points of islands — they are the best spots for consistent bass.
  • 4Check fishing regulations for both countries before your trip.
  • 5Northern wind seasons (November-February) can create dangerous conditions on the lake.
  • 6Falcon is a binational lake — carry your passport and fishing licenses for both countries if you plan to fish both sides, as patrols from both nations monitor the boundary.
  • 7The rocky islands in the central reservoir are Falcon's sweet spots — each island has a productive point or flat that holds fish, and island-hopping is the most efficient fishing strategy.
  • 8Monitor the Rio Grande inflow levels — when the river is running higher than normal, bass concentrate at the upper end of the reservoir where fresh water and baitfish accumulate.

Seasonal Fishing Guide

February through May is Falcon's legendary season. Water temperatures climb from winter lows into the 64-76°F sweet spot, triggering one of the most impressive pre-spawn and spawn bites in all of North America. Both largemouth bass and striped bass become highly active. Largemouth concentrate on rocky island points, gravel flats, and brushy shorelines in 4-15 feet of water. Jerkbaits, crankbaits, and swimbaits produce trophy-class fish with remarkable consistency.

October and November provide excellent fall fishing. Cooling temperatures activate aggressive feeding as bass and catfish prepare for winter. The fall pattern at Falcon focuses on main lake points and deep brush piles, with lipless crankbaits and Carolina rigs being top producers.

June through September is the off-season. The borderland heat pushes water temperatures above 86°F, and bass move to the deepest available structure. Night fishing for catfish becomes the primary activity, with trophy blue catfish over 30 pounds possible from deep channel bends.

December and January see cold fronts from the north that create volatile conditions. Water temperatures can swing 10°F in 24 hours, making pattern-finding challenging. However, the days between fronts can produce exceptional fishing as bass feed aggressively during the brief stable windows.

Fish Species Guide

Largemouth bass at Falcon are legendary trophy producers. The average bass runs 3-5 pounds, with 8-12 pounders caught regularly during the spring peak. Falcon's Mexican side has produced numerous fish exceeding 13 pounds. The bass benefit from an excellent forage base of shad and sunfish, plus the relatively stable water conditions of the binational reservoir. Key patterns include fishing rocky points with jerkbaits, flipping brush piles with jigs, and working gravel transitions with Carolina rigs.

Blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) are Falcon's other premium species. These giants reach 30-55 pounds in the deep Rio Grande channels that bisect the reservoir. Blue cats are targeted with large chunks of fresh-cut bait (carp, drum, or shad) fished on 8/0-10/0 circle hooks near deep channel bends. Their fight is pure power — a 40-pound blue cat on medium-heavy tackle provides an unforgettable battle.

Striped bass and hybrid striped bass add diversity to Falcon's fishery. These open-water predators roam the main lake basin, chasing shad schools. Trolling with deep-diving crankbaits and jigging with heavy spoons in 25-40 foot depths are the primary techniques. Stripers in the 8-15 pound range are realistic targets.

Channel catfish round out the species list, averaging 2-5 pounds and providing accessible fun for shore anglers and families.

How to Get There

From the Mexican side, the base city is Nueva Ciudad Guerrero, accessible from Monterrey (3 hours) or Nuevo Laredo (2 hours). From the US side, Falcon Heights, TX has marinas and boat ramps. Passport required for crossing.
