Presa Comedero: Wild Trophy Bass Territory
Presa José López Portillo, known as Comedero, is a massive 75,000+ acre reservoir in Sinaloa's Sierra Madre. Unlike El Salto, Comedero offers a more remote and wild experience, with less fishing pressure and bass that see fewer lures.
Why Comedero?
- Size: With 75,000+ acres, there's always untouched water to explore
- Structure: Thousands of submerged trees create perfect bass habitat
- Less pressure: Fewer visitors than El Salto means less educated fish
- Trophy potential: 8-15 lb bass are possible any day during season
Best Season
November to March (Peak Season)
Water levels drop, concentrating bass near structure. Cool mornings trigger feeding activity.
April to May
Post-spawn. Female bass recover weight aggressively.
Techniques Specific to Comedero
The key at Comedero is submerged structure. Timber under the water is the determining factor.
- Jig-and-pig — The #1 technique at Comedero. Cast to submerged logs and work slowly.
- Spinnerbait — To cover water quickly and find active fish.
- Medium crankbait — Productive along gradually sloping banks.
- Soft plastic on Texas rig — For tough days, work each log patiently.
Logistics
- Access: From Culiacán, 3-4 hours on dirt roads
- Lodging: Lake lodges (limited options, book months in advance)
- Guide: Essential — the lake is enormous and structure changes with water levels
- Rainy season: Roads may be impassable from July to September
